What are orthotics?
Orthotics are really just a medical term for custom foot supports. You can buy some ‘orthotics’ from over the counter at a chemist or footwear store; these are designed to suit an average foot – but as Podiatrists, we know very well that no two pairs of feet are exactly alike!
Orthotics, which are made by a Podiatrist are specifically designed to fit the needs of your individual feet. They help to balance the inequalities of your feet and legs and are a much greater, more comfortable and suitable match for your feet.
Our Podiatrists will assess your lower leg or foot complaint and be able to provide you with the answers to your condition. Sometimes orthotics are needed to treat certain conditions however, we also provide footwear recommendations, strengthening/stretching programs and other treatment options.
Orthotics can improve the alignment in your lower limb and feet; this can relieve foot, knee, hip and back pain. Orthotics allow for your injured structures to heal and also act to prevent injuries from reoccurring.
The way we walk and run can sometimes contribute to placing excessive stress on one part of the foot or leg. This can commonly occur in people with “flat feet” and can also occur in those who have “high arches” – this excessive stress or strain can cause damage to ligaments, tendons, muscles and bone. This is where orthotics can be used to unload this stress and give you the comfort and relief you desire.
At The Podiatry Group we use state of the art technology to assess you running and walking patterns so that we can provide you with the best treatment options.
